What This Article Helps You Do
This article walks you through the complete LawY onboarding process using our updated onboarding experience. Key setup steps are covered before you begin using LawY
This article is designed to help new firms get set up quickly, ensuring your firm is configured correctly and ready to use.
Before You Begin
Before starting the onboarding process, you’ll first need to complete the initial account setup steps, including:
Signing up to LawY
Verifying your email address
Entering your firm details
Setting up your Billing information
You can sign up to LawY here if you haven't already: https://home.lawy.ai/signup
Once these steps are completed, you’ll be taken to the Welcome to LawY onboarding screen where the guided setup process begins.
From here, click Continue to begin onboarding.
Understanding the Onboarding Screen
Before diving into setup steps, it helps to understand the layout of the onboarding experience:
Left panel: Displays your key onboarding steps in order (your setup checklist)
Help icon: Opens the LawY Help Center for support and guidance
Initials icon: Click to access your account, including Billing and Sign Out
Back button: Returns you to the previous step if needed
Next or Skip button: Proceeds to the next step in the setup process
These elements stay consistent throughout onboarding to help you easily keep track of your progress.
1. Connect Your Storage Solution
You can choose from the following options:
OneDrive or SharePoint
Dropbox
Google Drive
1.1 Storage Solution Authorisation Window
After clicking Connect, a pop-up window will appear from your selected provider (OneDrive, Dropbox, or Google Drive).
You can select Continue to proceed (if not already logged in) or Cancel.
1.2 Authentication Process
Once you click Connect to begin, you will be redirected to a new window to complete the sign-in and authorisation process. Each provider handles authentication independently, which may include steps such as:
Signing into your account
Completing multi-factor authentication (MFA)
Granting permission for LawY to access your files
Note: These steps are managed entirely by the storage provider and are not controlled by LawY
Important: At this stage, you are only connecting your storage solution to LawY. You will not be selecting matters yet. This will be completed in a later step during the onboarding process.
Once the connection is successfully completed, you will be returned to LawY. From here, click Next to continue to the next step in the onboarding process.
1.3 Need help connecting your storage?
If you need a step-by-step walkthrough for a specific storage provider, you can refer to the guides below:
2. Connect Your Email

2.1 Email providers
You can currently connect Outlook
Note: Gmail integration will be available in a future update.
2.2 What happens after connection
Once your email is connected, LawY can begin supporting email-related automation features based on your firm settings. This will include saving matter-related emails to your connected storage
2.3 Skip This Step
This step is optional. If you’re not ready to connect your email yet, you can click Skip and continue with the onboarding process.
3. Invite Your Staff and Collaborate
This step allows you to invite team members into your firm so they can collaborate within LawY. Key information about licensing and billing is displayed in the onboarding screen (see screenshot below).
3.1 Adding Staff Members
To invite staff:
Enter the user’s email address in the email field
Click the arrow icon to add them to the invite list
The user will then appear in a list below where you can:
Assign a role: Staff or Admin
Remove the user by clicking the X next to their name

Each user will receive an email invitation to join your firm.
3.3 Skip This Step
This step is optional. If you’re not ready to invite staff yet, you can click Skip and continue with the onboarding process.
4. Secure Your Firm
Protect your firm by enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). Refer to the screenshot below for the full explanation of MFA and how it applies to your firm.
4.1 Turn on MFA for Firm Accounts
If your firm has multiple users, you can enable MFA at a firm level using the toggle provided. This ensures additional security across all applicable accounts.
4.2 Secure Your Own Account
You can also enable MFA for your individual login to further protect your account.
Click Setup to begin.
4.3 MFA Setup Options
After clicking Setup, a separate window will open.
This is where you choose an authentication method. Available options include:
Google Authenticator or similar app
SMS verification
Each option will guide you through the authentication process within that window. The setup flow is managed in the authentication window and may vary slightly depending on the method you choose.
4.4 Skip this step
This step is optional. If you’re not ready to setup MFA yet, you can click Skip and continue with the onboarding process.
5. Select Your Firm Matter
As the final step of onboarding, you’ll be asked to select your first Matter folder (just one for onboarding). This helps LawY understand how your data is structured and begins setting up your workspace.
5.1 Choosing a Matter Folder
You will see your connected storage structure, including:
My files: Your personal folders
Shared files: Folders shared with you by others
Select the folder you would like to use as your first Matter. Example folders may include:
Client matters (e.g. “Atkinson”, “LM & Associates”)
Internal folders
5.2 Matter Validation
Once you select a folder, LawY will automatically check whether it looks like a Matter folder. If the selected folder does not appear to be a Matter, you may see a confirmation message such as:
5.3 How Parent Folders work
If the selected folder contains other subfolders, LawY may treat it as a parent Matter folder. Any subfolders inside it will continue to be evaluated and organised as potential Matters over time.
5.4 Suggested Matters (after selection)
After onboarding is completed, LawY may identify additional potential Matters in your storage. You may see a prompt suggesting additional folders to import.
5.5 What Happens Next
Once you select your first Matter, click Next to complete onboarding and LawY will begin processing and organising your documents in the background.
6. Ask LawY
Once you complete onboarding, you’ll land on the final screen. Click Let’s go to start using LawY and begin chatting with your Matter documents.
6.1 Onboarding Complete
Your setup is now complete! To begin, simply open a Matter and start asking questions in the LawY Chat interface.
No additional setup is required. Your documents are already being processed in the background and will continue to become available as ingestion completes.
