What This Article Helps You Do
This article provides step-by-step guidance on connecting, managing and disconnecting your Google Drive account in LawY. A connected storage solution is required to access Matter folders and enable Matter AI Chats
When connecting a storage solution, the way Matters are organised in LawY reflects your existing folder structure in that storage solution. For guidance on how to best structure your folders for Matter management, see the Best Practices for Organising Folders for LawY article
Before you Begin
Ensure you have access to the Google Drive account containing your Matter folders you wish to connect.
Ensure you have sufficient access to the Google Drive account to view the Matter folders that you want LawY to access.
If your organisation manages your Google Drive permissions centrally, verify that sharing and any security settings allow LawY to see those folders.
If you are unsure about your access level or encounter missing folders, consult your IT administrator or document storage administrator before proceeding.
1. Connect Google Drive During Onboarding
When you first start LawY, connecting a storage solution is required to access Matter folders and enable Matter AI Chats. Follow these steps to connect your Google Drive:
Click "Connect" on the startup screen to begin linking your Google Drive account.
Click "Continue" when prompted to log in to your Google Drive account to authorize LawY to access your folders.
Note: Once you click Connect to begin, you will be redirected to a new window to complete the sign-in and authorisation process. Each provider handles authentication independently.
Enter your email account and click "Next"
Enter your password and complete any additional authentication steps required by Google Drive. (This is a Google Drive process, not handled by LawY).
Important: At this stage, you are only connecting your storage solution to LawY. You will not be selecting matters yet. This will be completed in a later step during the onboarding process.
Once the connection is successfully completed, you will be returned to LawY. From here, click Next to continue to the next step in the onboarding process.
2. Select Your Firm Matter
After connecting your Google Drive, you'll be taken to the Select your firm matter step. Here, LawY displays the folders from your connected drive, allowing you to select your first Matter folder (Just one folder). This initial selection helps LawY understand your folder structure and start configuring your workspace.
Note: If for any reason you haven't connected your storage solution, you can always access it later by navigating to your Profile icon (top left) → Account Settings → Admin.
2. Import Matters Setup
After connecting your Google Drive, you'll need to select the folders containing your matters to make them available in LawY. Both My Files and Shared Files are available options. Either can be used depending on where your matter folders are stored.
In the Import matters pop-up screen, there are two folder categories: My Files and Shared Files
My Files: Folders that belong to your account
Shared Files: Folders shared with you by others
Click the checkbox next to the folder(s) you wish to import.
Selected folders will appear at the bottom left of the pop-up screen.
Once you have selected all desired folders, click "Next" on the right side of the screen to proceed.
Once the connection is successful, a confirmation message will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen
You will be typically taken back to the Home Page, where your Matters will begin loading in the Matter List on the left side of the screen
Note: Occasionally, you may not be redirected automatically, in that case, navigate back to the Home Page manually to view your Matters.
3. Access or Manage Google Drive Later
Once your Google Drive is connected, you can Manage or Disconnect your Google Drive at any time:
Click the Profile Icon in the top-right corner of LawY
Select Account Settings
Click Admin
Click Manage to select or deselect Matter folders. This opens the Import matters pop up screen.
Click Disconnect to remove the linked Google Drive folder. You'll receive a warning message to confirm before disconnecting.
Tip: Disconnecting a folder will disable Matter AI Chats for the Matters in that folder.
