LawY Connected Agents

The LawY connector connects your firm's matters and documents to 3rd party agents such as ChatGPT and Claude, allowing you to work with your matters in your agent of choice.

What you need

  • A paid LawY account with the Connected Agents functionality enabled. Contact your firm administrator to turn it on if required.

  • An access grant: a LawY Firm Administrator sets up your default access; you then connect your agent.

  • A Claude account (claude.ai or Claude Desktop) or a ChatGPT account.

What it does

Once connected, your AI agent (Claude or ChatGPT) can:

  • List all matters you have access to. This lets the agent create summaries across all your accessible matters, for example.

  • List and search documents within the accessible matters.

  • Read documents. It reads the extracted text of a document, or the exact original file when the text is not enough, such as a scan, an image, or a spreadsheet.

  • Create new documents. For example drafting chronologies or research reports, using existing matter documents as context.

  • Update existing documents. It replaces the content of a document you asked it to update. If the document changed since the agent read it, the update is refused instead of overwriting the newer work.

  • Organise. It creates folders and moves documents, if your access grant includes those permissions.

The agent can only see and do what your access grant allows. It cannot access matters, documents, or actions outside your own LawY permissions, and it cannot delete anything: the connector has no delete capability.

Operations performed by third-party agents can be audited in the Connected Agents panel in LawY.

How to connect in Claude

  1. In Claude, go to Settings → Connectors (or browse the connector directory) and find LawY.

  2. Choose Connect. Your browser opens the LawY sign-in.

  3. Sign in with your LawY account and approve the connection.

  4. Back in Claude, your accessible matters are available. You can start with: "List my LawY matters."

How to connect in ChatGPT

  1. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Apps & Connectors and find LawY.

  2. Choose Connect and sign in with your LawY account when prompted.

  3. Approve the connection, then start with: "List my LawY matters."

Disconnecting

You can disconnect at any time in the Connected Agents panel in LawY, which immediately suspends the agent's access. You can also disconnect in the connector's settings in your agent of choice. Your firm administrator can block the connector for the whole firm at any time.

Permissions and allowed changes

If Connected Agents functionality is turned on, all matters and operations are enabled by default. Firm administrators can then further restrict things at a matter and document level, including which read and write operations are allowed, and users can further limit their own agent-enabled access as well. Access is checked against your current LawY permissions on every request.

  • Administrators can turn the connector off for the whole firm. When it is off, no connection works.

  • Permissions can carry an end date, and a grant can be revoked at any time; access stops immediately.

  • Every action an agent takes is recorded in the Activity log in the Connected Agents panel, so users and administrators can audit what was done.

  • You can see exactly what your own agent access covers in the Your access section of the Connected Agents panel.

  • The agent can never delete anything.

  • Updates are version-checked. If a document changed since the agent read it, the update is refused rather than overwriting the newer work.

  • Adding a new document with the same name as an existing file in the same folder is refused; the existing file is kept.

Troubleshooting

  • Sign-in does not complete, or bounces back to the agent. Start the connection again from the agent's settings.

  • The agent has no access, or fewer tools than expected. Check permissions at both levels: your Firm Administrator's firm settings, and your own access under Your access in the Connected Agents panel.

  • A save or update is refused because the document changed. This is the version check protecting newer work: nothing was overwritten. Ask the agent to read the current version and make the change again.

  • The agent says a document with that name already exists. This happens when adding a new document; the connector never overwrites an existing file. Choose a new filename or a different folder. Updating an existing document is a separate action and is not affected.

  • A save shows as accepted but not verified. The change was submitted and the final check has not confirmed it yet. The agent can check the status; if it stays unconfirmed, get in touch.

  • The connector stops responding. Disconnect and reconnect in the Connected Agents panel in LawY.
