How to use Document sharing

Document Sharing lets you give someone outside your firm a client, or third party secure access to a matter by email, and lets them send documents straight back into it.

Sharing a matter

Open the matter you want to share and select the Documents tab.

Select Share

Enter the person's email address.

Choose their access level:

  • View only: they can see what's in the matter.

  • View & upload: they can see what's in the matter and upload files back to you.

Select Invite.

Sub-folders inherit the access you grant, so you don't need to share each one separately.

What the recipient sees

They receive an email "Files shared with you" with a button to view.

When they open it, LawY sends a one-time verification code to their email address.

They enter the code to confirm their identity. No LawY account or password is required.

They can then view the shared matter securely at sharing.lawy.ai.

Receiving documents back

If you gave someone View & upload access, they can add files by dragging and dropping them, just like uploading to any cloud drive. Those files load automatically into the matter in LawY you don't need to download or re-file anything.

Managing access

  • Open the matter and select People to see who currently has access and at what level.

  • To remove someone’s access click the trash can icon next to their name.

Tips

  • Use View only when someone just needs to read documents (e.g. sending a draft for review).

  • Use View & upload when you need documents back (e.g. a client returning signed forms or evidence)
